Data Structures & Algorithms

This course provides students with foundational concepts, patterns and techniques used in data-intensive applications. Students will learn how to build reliable systems that can collect, store and manage large amounts of information. This course covers basic programming fundamentals including variables, control flow statements (loops), functions, objects, recursion, iteration, conditionals, strings, arrays, lists, dictionaries, sets, files, databases, and web services. Students will work through several real world projects where they apply their learning to code in a variety of languages, including C++, Java, JavaScript, SQL, Scala, PHP, R, Ruby, and Python. This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts needed to write programs using python. By the end of this course, students should have developed a fundamental understanding of Python syntax, control structures, iterative and recursive loops, object oriented programming, function definitions, class definitions, string manipulation/processing, conditional expressions, file handling, database access and querying, sorting, and searching algorithms. Students are expected to use the provided texts written in English and translate them into their own language. All assignments are graded and provide useful feedback related to your progress towards completing the assignment. Each student receives a unique identification number for each project.

Applied Computer Science

The focus of this course is to give students hands on experience with practical computer science tasks. Students will work on projects in small teams to complete these tasks. These projects cover various topics from operating systems, web application security, cloud computing, distributed computing, mobile applications, robotics, artificial intelligence, embedded systems, cyber forensics, cryptography, networking, machine learning, and game theory. Each team is given a problem statement and allowed to choose any technology stack to solve the problem. Projects span a wide array of technologies from hardware to software to firmware. At the end of each semester, each team chooses a topic area for a final presentation. Students will present their research and design ideas in front of the class at the beginning of the following semester.

Software Engineering

Software engineering teaches students about the different types of problems engineers face, and different solutions to those problems.. In this course, we’ll take a look at some of these approaches, and examine ways to evaluate them. We’ll also explore what makes certain approaches better than others, and discuss the tradeoffs between efficiency, flexibility, and maintainability.
